Interesting Information Regarding drinking water in Augusta, Georgia:According to the EPA, The Peach Orchard Road PCE Ground Water Plume site, located in the southern part of Augusta, is a tetrachloroethylene (PCE) ground water plume that has impacted one of the three Augusta Utilities Department well fields. The PCE ground water plume covers an estimated 350 acres of the 900 acre well field. The ground water contamination was first detected in one of the City’s wells in June of 1996 during routine sampling of municipal well water. Since then, PCE has been detected in six additional municipal wells in the Peach Orchard Well Field and in numerous monitoring wells installed in the area.
Also, between December 1999 and November 2000, The Georgia Environmental Protection Division conducted an investigation that showed widespread PCE contamination in ground water. Trichloroethylene cis 1,2 dichloroethylene and vinyl chloride were also detected in several ground water samples. Sampling indicated that the PCE concentrations were increasing over time.
