THINGS to Know about Iron Filters:
And well water treatment systems in general. First:
Never use a softener as an iron filter. That is just plain stupid.
Many in home sales companies use that trick to make a softener use more salt and
require expensive service calls down the road. Don't fall for this trick. Any
reputable water dealer should know you don't use a softener as an iron filter;
just like they should know you virtually never drink the water from a water
softener.
Never use a Fleck control valve on an iron filter or well water with
iron in it (Though we do sell Fleck valves when properly applied). A lot of
companies do this to save money but the Fleck control valve is a piston driven
valve. If you put iron in the cylinder shaft and then have a piston and o-rings
move up and down that shaft you are eventually doomed for failure and a lot of
expensive service calls. If you use the Autotrol cam shaft driven valve for iron
applications you are involving flappers, not pistons. The flappers are iron
friendly and there are no pistons, shafts or o-rings to "Bugger". And they
are made in easy to replace components so a service call is rarely necessary.
The homeowner can usually do it themselves in a moment or two. It is well worth
your money to invest in a valve other than a Fleck on iron water.
Never use a Fleck 5600 valve. It is a wasteful dinosaur! Just don't do
it and don't respect anyone who would. they do not have YOUR best interest in
mind!
Never chlorinate a well with iron unless there is a coliform or e-coli
type bacterium issue. The iron will oxidize when the chlorine hits it and settle
to the bottom of the well. Keep doing that on a regular basis and one day the
pump will likely pick all of that oxidized iron up and force it all through the
home at once, ruining everything it touches! When in doubt ask one of our
techs for advice before chlorinating a well with iron in it.
Never Use Greensand on flow rates below 4.5 Gallons per Minute unless
our techs instruct you otherwise. greensand is usually your last choice when
nothing else will work because the flow rate is too low.
Never Use Birm Filters or air injection filters on pH ranges below
8.0.
Never deal with any company who does not INSIST on pH and Flow Rate
information before ever making a quote. It is impossible to size a unit of any
kind without this BASIC information.
NOTE: Please don't hesitate and call to speak with an expert
technician about your situation. Our techs know your their stuff!
| *How to test your flow rate:
Find the nearest faucet in the home that is AFTER the pressure
tank, not the one on the pressure tank. Open the faucet and run
water until the pump starts. The instant the pump turns on, turn
the water off while pump is continues to run. Count the seconds
the pump runs and write the number down. Then:
a. Open
the faucet between pressure tank and house. Run water into
container (a 5 gallon bucket or empty gallon container seems
best. Remember you may have to quickly empty the bucket 1 or
more times during this process) and record the VOLUME
(gallons or liters) of water it takes for pump to start up
again.
Call or e-mail one of our technicians and they will tell you
exactly which tank you need. there are some variables involved
so be sure and speak with us before ordering.. |
